Minnesota Vikings Linked To Veteran Free Agent Star Defensive Back For 2024
Jerome Miron-USA TODAY Sports

The Minnesota Vikings are going to be an intriguing team to watch early in the 2024 NFL season. No one truly knows what kind of team they’re going to be when everything is said and done. They could end up being a contender in the NFC, or they may need another year or two to get back contention.

While the roster is talented, there are still quite a few holes. One of the biggest concerns is at cornerback, especially in the NFC North division with Jordan Love, Jared Goff, and Caleb Williams.

Late in the offseason, roster moves slow down and teams are relatively set from a roster perspective. However, there are some very good free agents still available. The Vikings could take a look at shoring up their secondary by dipping into the free agency market.

Minnesota Vikings Linked To Free Agent Star Defensive Back

NFL Trade Rumors took a look at the remaining free agents and they connected the Minnesota Vikings to one in particular. They think that the Vikings could be a potential suitor for free agent star cornerback Stephon Gilmore.

“Flores knows Gilmore after overlapping in New England and competing against him as head coach of the Dolphins. Gilmore is a perfect fit for his defense with his combination of skills and smarts, and the Vikings remain unsettled at cornerback.”

It is surprising that Gilmore is still a free agent at this stage of the offseason. He has been one of the more dependable cornerbacks for years. There are still quite a few teams that could use cornerback help as well.

During the 2023 season with the Dallas Cowboys, Gilmore ended up having yet another solid season. He compiled 68 total tackles to go along with a forced fumble, two interceptions, and 13 defended passes.

Those numbers would be a big addition for the Minnesota Vikings’ defense. Brian Flores, the team’s defensive coordinator, likes playing aggressive in the secondary. With his current group, that would be a very dangerous thing to do and could allow big plays over the top.

Adding a piece like Gilmore would give the Vikings a proven veteran presence who could cover opposing No. 1 receivers. Gilmore is also a more than capable playmaker.

While the Minnesota Vikings make a ton of sense for Gilmore, there are other teams that could consider signing him as well. Among those teams are the Indianapolis Colts, Kansas City Chiefs, and Houston Texans.

If the Vikings want to add Gilmore, they’ll need to move quickly, as he’s sure to get a new deal in the near future.
