Dusty May has done some impressive work since becoming Michigan basketball head coach. The transfer haul of the Wolverines was one of the best in college hoops and should have U-M competing for an NCAA tournament berth.

May said that he wanted to be good right away and put the Wolverines in a position to do that with his additions via the portal. Yet, May also said he wanted to focus on high school recruiting and has made 5-star Darryn Peterson, the No. 3 overall prospect in the 2025 class (via 247 Sports composite) a top priority.

Michigan is back in the mix for elite prospect

Michigan basketball made the top eight before Juwan Howard was fired. After that, and some changes at other schools, Peterson re-opened his recruitment. May and the Wolverines re-offered soon after that and here’s what Peterson’s dad told Davis Moseley of 247 Sports about the re-offer and Michigan basketball.

“Michigan called us to re-introduce themselves,” Peterson said. “We were always excited about Juwan, back then it wasn’t as much about Michigan as it was Juwan. With the new staff, it’s all about building that back up. We have watched (Dusty) for a while now and we see that the style fits what Darryn does. (Michigan) wants him with the ball in his hands at the point.”

Peterson is from Huntington, West Virginia, but is originally from Ohio. Ohio State is in the mix along with Kentucky, Kansas, USC, South Carolina, USC, Washington, and Louisville according to his dad.

It sounds like Peterson will visit all of those schools. His dad also told Moseley that he’ll visit Michigan basketball, which is another positive sign. It remains to be seen if May can land a five-star recruit, especially one ranked No. 3 overall.

Michigan hasn’t done that in a long time, but with May, anything seems possible and there’s no doubt that the Wolverines new head coach has made a positive impression on one of the best players in the 2025 class.
